The two concepts below were for a series of exercises in my advanced illustration class with instructor Don Giancola.
The assignment was to take Hemmingway's Old Man & The Sea, and make a sci-fi adaptation for it.
The two characters depicted below are Santiago and Manolin respectively.

My adapted story:
Santiago windsurfs / sails on these great hilled plains scouring the skies for flying manta rays.
The atmosphere has different ranges / depths; and at certain depths there is giant magic flying marine life.
Santiago fathoms rope / fishing line and then balloons them up into the sky using fishing "floaters".
Both characters keep a lot of their faces/bodies covered so they doesn't inhale all the billowing dust etc.
When Santiago hooks a catch eventually he brings it down to a lower altitude where he or Manolin can shoot the hunted beast with bow&arrow.
In the end, after catching a giant manta, Santiago loses the flesh of the beast to swarming seagulls.
so awesome. O_O Teach me your ways! I so suck at this kind of things.
ReplyDeleteFrank Drucker, a producer asked me if I can find another inner city style artist for a small budget deal, I think you fit the profile, do you want to try it out? Let me know.
